Defrosted the starling and worked on him whilst the bones were soaking :)
I really need practise with small birds, their skin is like tissue paper! Was also awkward working around the rump where the skin had been ripped and there was lots of blood beneath the skin.
In the end I took off the head and left as much of the good feathering attached as I could, took off both wings and pinned them to dry, took the feet off at the ankle and have left them as they are to dry, removed as much of the tissue from the remaining skeleton and have put it in a sealed pot to macerate. I also removed the heart and have put it in alcohol, though I want to try mummifying/drying it out.
Interesting thing, bird testes atrophy (shrink) when it’s not the breeding season. The two orange balls were infact the testes of this starling.
Sky burial is a ritual that has great religious meaning. Tibetans are encouraged to witness this ritual, to confront death openly and to feel the impermanence of life. They believe that the corpse is nothing more than an empty vessel. The spirit, or the soul, of the deceased has exited the body to be reincarnated into another circle of life. The corpse is offered to the vultures.
It is believed that the vultures are Dakinis. Dakinis are the Tibetan equivalent of angels. In Tibetan, Dakini means “sky dancer”. Dakinis will take the soul into the heavens, which is understood to be a windy place where souls await reincarnation into their next lives.
Azt hittem, ilyen csak a mesében van.
Humán planet c. BBC sorozatban van róla szó, én is csak onnan tudtam
Photoset of the foetal kittens.
Initially they had a lot of blood in the water (leftover from the blood vessels in the uterus which were severed during the spaying) and faeces (which were free floating in the amniotic sac). I was only able to rinse off the blood before I took them home, and last night I just gave them a thorough rinse under cold water to get the faeces off.
The jelly bean kitten was probably around 32 to 38 days (in development terms) as the organs have formed, the eye is developing and it has tiny nails on its paws. The three feral kittens were probably anywhere from 48 days plus, as they already have skin pigmentation. I’m estimating how old they were as we had no information for when the cats became pregnant and referring to this useful website.
And as for names, from left to right; Jelly Bean or Runty, Daenerys (the poor thing had a lot of spunk - it moved pre and post it’s euthanasia injection), Lady and Patches.
Incredibly rare: Three whitetail bucks locked horns in battle and drowned together in a creek in Ohio.
